Environment
One of the miracles of cattle is their ability to consume feedstuffs that would otherwise be wasted, and convert these into nutritious, safe and wholesome beef for people.
Our feedyards have become "recyclers" of wholesome products that otherwise would go to waste and be hauled to landfills. Potatoes fed in the rations are byproducts of regional potato processing plants which include cooked peelings, trim (excess potato after fries are cut), and french fries that miss processor specifications.
As a result, feeds such as potato byproducts, and other natural protein sources are incorporated into nutritionally balanced diets. All of these products are highly nutritional and represent a 100% vegetarian energy source.
Use of these byproducts reduces the level of corn that would otherwise be fed in the ration and helps reduce the cost of producing food products for all consumers.
The processing plants and Beef Northwest follow strict food safety assurance guidelines to ensure the quality of the byproducts that become cattle feed.
The cattle receive these by-products as part of their normal, three-times-a-day feeding. The ingredients are blended together right before each feeding and sampled and then are tested for quality and nutrition by an independent laboratory.
